The Joys of Rain?

Anyone reading this Blog and who lives in the UK will be well aware of how poor the weather has been of late.  However, for those of you who live elsewhere and therefore have not had the somewhat dubious pleasure of experiencing our frequent and impressive downpours, let me assure you that even for somewhere like the UK, which sees its fair share of rain the weather has been rather miserable.

Such has been the severity of the rain that roads, motorways and railways have been closed and homes flooded.  Not surprisingly, this has caused travel chaos for large numbers of people, myself included.  As you will appreciate I tend to travel around the country quite a bit and of late this has not be pleasant.

Still, there is always a bright side to just about any situation, or so I like to think and sitting in traffic jams caused by the weather allows me to think about and ponder on a whole range of things.

One of which was the content of a Blog that I have recently read.  The Blog in question was by an american chap by the name of Michael Hyatt and on his Blog he was addressing the issue of saying NO.  Now it would appear that Mr Hyatt has always had difficulty in saying no to people.  Something with which I can truly empathise.

In his Blog he writes about ways of saying NO in an effective manner, hopefully without causing offence. One of the ways that he recommends is a three stage approach.  Start positive by thanking the person for thinking of you adding if possible praise for whatever it is they are doing.  Having done then this, then follow by firmly declining the request.  This ensures that there is no doubt that you are unable to assist.  Finally, try to finish on a positive note by suggesting how they might achieve their aim without involving you.

Well as I mentioned earlier, I can certainly empathise with Mr Hyatt regarding saying NO as this is something with which I have great difficulty.  Indeed, over the years it has resulted in my saying Yes to things I really have not wanted to do and could have kicked myself for agreeing to.  So, I am more than willing to give the suggested method a try and hopefully it will prevent me from taking on unwanted commitments.
