Level 3 Award in Oxygen Therapy Administration

Course Description

This training enables users to administer oxygen safely and effectively, for casualties with breathing difficulties. Students attending this course will learn how and when to administer oxygen to a casualty, as well as the safety concerns, which need to be considered with regard to the carrying, storing and administration of oxygen.

The course is suitable for qualified First Aiders, Emergency first Aiders, Dental Practitioners and Dental Care Professionals, Nurses, Healthcare Professionals and others working in an environment where oxygen is available for casualty welfare.

Course Duration

The course consists of 6 contact hours of theoretical and practical work. Dependant on the student’s prior experience there may be a requirement for some pre-course or post-course study. In such an event support and guidance can, if required, be provided to the student.

Course Syllabus

The course syllabus includes the following topics:

  • Assessment of the situation
  • The benefits of oxygen therapy
  • Identifying indications for the administration of oxygen
  • Contraindications prohibiting the administration of oxygen
  • The potential dangers in using compressed gas
  • The health and safety rules pertaining to the:
    • Use
    • Storage
    • Handling of oxygen
  • Administering oxygen sing the required flow rate for the following oxygen delivery devices:
    • Non re-breather mask
    • Bag valve and mask
  • Operational checks in preparation for the administration of oxygen
  • Identifying when oxygen administration is required
  • Administering oxygen to a patient in line with agreed working practices
  • Dealing with an unresponsive casualty
  • Basic Life Support
  • Recognition and First Aid treatment of Shock

Certification

Subject to assessment, all participants will be issued with a Level 3 Award in Oxygen Therapy Administration. This qualification is valid for 3 years, which may be renewed by attending a suitable One-Day Re-qualification Course. In addition, it is strongly recommended that all students attend an annual refresher course.

Numbers

A maximum of 12 students can be accommodated on this course and each participant must be aged a minimum of 16 years or above.

Assessment

All students will be subject to on-going assessment during the course in order to ensure that they are able to act safely, promptly and effectively when oxygen administration is appropriate. In addition, students will be required to sit a theoretical, multiple-choice question test paper.

Location

We are able to offer this course at your location, subject to a pre-course assessment of your premises, thus reducing your costs in respect of additional time out and travelling.
