Description

It often seems that we are constantly being, barraged by information telling us of the importance of a healthy and balanced diet. Whether we think this is a case of information overload or good practice, it is important to remember that a healthy diet is important.

A healthy, well balanced diet can help us to reach and maintain a healthy weight, reduce our risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, and promote our overall health and help us to achieve a better quality of life.

This Level 2, nationally accredited, course is designed for anyone who is working, or seeking a career in food preparation and/or food service.

It will give you basic knowledge of nutrition which will help you prepare well-balanced meals and menus, the result of which will have a positive impact on health. In addition, it will also provide you with an understanding of special dietary requirements.

If your area of employment is within hospitals, school kitchens, residential homes or community based kitchens, then this course will assist you in preparing well balanced and nutritional meals.

Indeed, if you are considering a career in the food industry then this course will provide you with a good understanding and appreciation of nutritional values and what constitutes a well-balanced diet.

It will also help those who are active in sport and recreation, in respect of producing well-balanced diets to support that activity.

Duration

This is a half-day course and consists of 4 contact hours of theoretical and interactive group work. Dependant on the learner’s experience, there may well be some pre-course or post-course reading.

Syllabus

The course is made up of theoretical sessions delivered by your Instructor who will provide a detailed course syllabus. The following topics will be covered during the course:

  • The principles of balanced diets
  • Current Government nutritional guidelines for a healthy diet
  • Sources of essential nutrients
  • The impact of diet on health
  • Catering principles that help maintain the nutritional value of food
  • How to plan and provide special diets
  • The impact of special diets on health
  • Catering practices to be considered when planning and providing meals for those on special diets

Certification

This is achieved by on-going theoretical teaching by the instructor, culminating with a multiple-choice question paper at the end. Subject to successful assessment, all participants will be issued with a Level 2 Award in Introduction to Nutrition.

Course Numbers

A maximum of 16 students can be accommodated on this course and those attending must be a minimum of 14 years of age.

Assessment

All students will be subject to on-going assessment during the course and they will then be required to sit a theoretical, multiple-choice question test paper.

Location

We are able to offer this course at your location, subject to a pre-course assessment of your premises, thus reducing your costs in respect of additional time out and travelling.
